Getting out of the dumps

Down in the dumps', 'Stuck in a rut', 'Slumps'. Terms like these can be applied equally well to many aspects of life and a PhD is no exception. Any prolonged piece of research is going to throw up challenges and when the excitement of 'the beginning' has worn off and 'the end' is not yet in sight you may find yourself in a mid-way slump. So here is my advice on how to get through, out of the rut and out of the dumps!
- Set short term goals - try to stop worrying about the big picture and set yourself an attainable goal that you can achieve within a day or two so you can see the progress you really are making.
- Learn a new skill - As a PhD researcher you have the opportunity to recieve training in many things for free because your university probably provides training courses. New skills, whether they are directly or only indirectly related to your PhD can offer inspiration and give you a break from your normal routine.
- Don't complain (too much) - when you're feeling down in the dumps complaining is easy to do - it can even be a bit funny if you can make a joke out of it (see next point). But don't do it too much! Complaining is really a way for you to focus on negative things.
- Try to see the funny side - this is a good place for friends to come in and you should try and spend time with enthusiastic people. The truth is that many PhDs go through the slump and I find the most comfort is sitting with my lab mates at lunch time poking fun at ourselves for silly mistakes and how long things are taking. When I feel we are all 'in it together' and that I am not isolated it's the absolute best medicine for me.
And finally, above all else, be assured that the feelings will pass. With support from those around you, a positive attitude mixed with some positive action, you can get through this phase of your PhD and you'll soon be feeling motivated again.
