Networking Event Advice

When you attend an event that presents a networking opportunity you want to try and meet and pass your details on to as many people as possible, whilst appearing relaxed and natural. This is a skill and more importantly a skill that can be learned. My approach is not to think about what I might get out of meeting new people in the long run. I genuinely like meeting new people and learning about them. If, in time, it transpires that they can help me with a career or business issue then fantastic. But if not then I still have the opportunity to meet some nice people. Of course, if I also know that someone in the room can definitely help me then I will make sure I meet them as a matter of priority. Getting a balance between meeting people who can help you in the short term and who may help in the long term is important because you can never know what will happen in the future. I am c... read more

What is Networking?

A brief Google search will reveal that many people consider networking to be the single most effective strategy used in advancing your career. Therefore, learning the skills for effective networking is definitely worth the time and energy. All postgraduates can benefit by learning effective networking techniques and practices that will allow them to maintain professional contacts that can be used as sources and references for future jobs. But what is networking in the first place? Put simply, networking is just a synonym for developing and maintaining contacts and personal connections with a variety of people who might be helpful to you. That is all, nothing to be scared of or repulsed by. I know that when I first thought of networking I imagined a room full of self-important people mingling with malicious intent and hidden motivations, shaking hands with false smiles. That is why... read more

Becoming Part of an Academic Network

Ah, networking! Don't you just love it? The thrill of throwing on a sharp suit/outfit (carefully selected to create just the right impression) and working a room. Pressing the flesh, and handing out verbal (followed by actual) business cards to all those who might do you a favour and gain you some advantage in the future. Slick? Superficial? Smarmy? Oh yes indeed! Honestly, there are some people who think like that - but I'm not one of them. The N-word tends to make me feel that everyone else involved will think like that, and so I'll want to avoid them (and the N-event) at all costs. But, of course, the reality is quite different from the caricature. Whilst effective networking does require a degree of talking to people one doesn't know, which inevitably contains an element of superficiality, it need not be slick or rampant. In fact, it can be hugely enjoyable. To be honest I o... read more

5 Useful Tips to make yourself Better at Networking

1. Remember names The first thing to do is to try and remember names and personal details. It's so easy, when meeting lots of new people, to wash over peoples' names without meaning to. They best way is to try and find something interesting and relevant about the person that is memorable. For example a shared experience or interest will help you recall a person e.g. 'ah yes, John is the representative from ...... and he recently went on holiday to the same area of Italy that I did and he also has some great contacts in my field.' 2. Ask questions The best way to start a conversation with someone is to ask them about themselves. In general people like talking about their own lives and so if you begin by asking them about their journey or their previous experience of conferences or events you will have a good conversation going in no time. This is particularly good ... read more

Networking Experiences

Sometimes when it comes to networking there is only so much advice you can take. A big part of improving networking skills is to get out there and talk to people. This article will cover my experiences and how I coped with 'getting out there'. When I was faced with my first networking event I remember feeling very nervous and feeling a lot of pressure to get something out of it. I never dreamt of being able to 'work the room' successfully like a number of my more experienced colleagues were able to. Large groups of strangers still make me feel nervous but I have developed a number of strategies to help me cope. Before the event I find it useful to visualise yourself being very relaxed and talkative. It puts you in the right frame of mind and lets you bury the nervous emotions. At my first event I think I let nerves get the better of me and I ended up not being as conversationally a... read more
