Networking Event Advice

When you attend an event that presents a networking opportunity you want to try and meet and pass your details on to as many people as possible, whilst appearing relaxed and natural. This is a skill and more importantly a skill that can be learned. My approach is not to think about what I might get out of meeting new people in the long run. I genuinely like meeting new people and learning about them. If, in time, it transpires that they can help me with a career or business issue then fantastic. But if not then I still have the opportunity to meet some nice people. Of course, if I also know that someone in the room can definitely help me then I will make sure I meet them as a matter of priority. For the last few weeks many of my posts have contained references to the importance of networking for postgraduates searching for and securing work. A brief Google search will reveal that many people consider networking to be the single most effective strategy used in advancing your career. Therefore, learning the skills for effective networking is definitely worth the time and energy. All postgraduates can benefit by learning effective networking techniques and practices that will allow them to maintain professional contacts that can be used as sources and references for future jobs.
